Frequently asked questions

How do I order a criminal record check?

We recommend ordering a DBS non-criminal record check, because is issued by Scottish authorities, is nationwide, and covers all UK citizents for £25. The turnaround times can vary, so it is best to contact the office for the most up to date information. For more information on ordering your DBS check, please click here.

How do I get my documents legalized by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO)?

Make sure that your degree is notarized by a notary public (solicitor) and that your original criminal record check is either signed by the issuing authority or also notarized by a notary public. Ensure that the notary is registered with the FCO or their verification won't be accepted. The cost for getting each documents legalized is £30 and the processing time is 2-5 business days. Review the FCO website for detailed instructions and up to date information.

How do I authenticate documents from abroad?

Gathering documetns required for the Z visa while outside the UK isn't as complex as it may appear, it just involves more shipping costs. You'll need someone that you trust to be able to send and receive the documetns and to ship them to you once they have been authenticated by the Chinese consulate/embassy. For anyone applying from outside the UK, we recommend using a service which can handle notarization, legalization by the FCO, and authentication by the Chinese embassy.

STEP 2 - APPLY FOR Z VISA AT THE CHINESE CONSULATE/EMBASSY

Once all of the required documents have been scanned and emailed and approved by your visa handler, your company will apply for your Notification of Work Permit at the China Foreign Experts Bureau. When your permit is issued, it will be couriered (DHL or FedEx) to you so you can apply for your visa at the nearest Chinese Consulate (4-5 business days). Note that you will have to apply for your visa at the consulate you listed on your original application form, as this is where your documents have been sent. You can also chose to apply for your Z visa on arrival in Hong Kong (1 day), but it's best to discuss this option with the placement company first.
